Michele Serino Congratulations to Rhode Island Hospital’s MICHELE SERINO, RDH, RN, MSN, CNOR perioperative education coordinator (now; Director of Patient Quality and Safety Perioperative Services) for conducting a one day education program on Universal protocol for 1200 people -- surgeons, anesthesia care providers, perioperative nurses, and scrub techs and anyone who does procedures in their 30 ORs! It was quit the feat!! AND November 20, 2009 was quite the day!

The hospital developed a core team- periop administrator, a surgeon who later became our OR director, two clinical managers, a project manager, and Michele as the educator. A sister hospital joined in with one educator, one administrator, one clinical manager of their 12 Ors. They revised their Universal protocol (yet again!) and developed a new Perioperative checklist. In six hours on a Saturday, they made a Universal Protocol movie for which the periop administrators and educators wrote the script). The educators developed a PowerPoint presentation, posters, hand outs, and case scenarios to prompt staff about the protocol changes.

They then held a train the trainer session for a multidisciplinary group of surgeons, anesthesiologists, CRNAs, nurses and surgical techs. With administrative support from the Chief of surgery (who acted as a narrator for the movie) and the VP of medical affairs, the group held eight hour and a half training sessions at one hospital and six at the other, training 1200 people – all on Nov 20th !! All who helped did a phenomenal job!  They change an entire process in one day we continue to change the culture through behavioral and process audits.

Marilyn Santiago MARILYN SANTIAGO has been can OR nurse for 20 years and overseas surgery team volunteer for 12 years. People often tell her what a great thing she's doing, but she's the one who feels privileged and blessed to be able to participate. One of her favorite things was to take Polaroid photos of the kids and their parents and give them each a photo. She would get someone to explain to the first patient how the picture would appear. The first family would wave the photo until the picture appeared and pass on the information to the next family.

This is a two year old girl who would not give up her pictureto anyone. In fact, she clutched it tightly in her hand until she was anesthetized.
