Tracey Sanford - 2010 Delegate Report

Tracey Sanford
MPA, BSN, RN, CNOR
As a Delegate for the E Chapter to AORN Congress, I always go prepared to be "energized" by the issues and the discussion of the issues that impact us as perioperative nurses and this year was no exception. The House of Delegates and Forums allowed each of us to really "engage" without the distractions of home or work, in the discussion of the issues that will drive the future of our organization.

This was our opportunity to listen and voice our concerns to the Board and the attending membership, regarding practice issues and practical issues that impact us as perioperative nurses in our practice setting. Every year I am impressed with the amount of work and hours that AORN Task Forces spend to research issues, propose a plan of action to bring before the membership for our education and consideration.

This year the House of Delegates gave us the opportunity to understand the efforts that have gone into researching the One Member One Vote and the all the By Laws issues. These issues took on meaning for me beyond what I had read in my Delegate preparation, as we listened to the Task Force presentation and the concerns of our colleagues. For me, it was hearing those "live" that in the end, allowed me to thoughtfully further consider the issues and cast my vote.

I encourage any of you who wish to attend or are plannig to attend Congress in 2011, to consider applying to be a Delegate. You will not be sorry you took the responsibility, as it will enlighten, energize and stretch you in ways you'd never considered.
