Not only was this my first AORN Congress, but I was invited to serve as a delegate representing my eChapter. Needless to say, it has been much more of an experience than I could have ever imagined. I think this is something that every operating room nurse should be able to participate in. Now, I will definitely want to attend every year. One thing I remember thinking was that it wouldn’t seem so strange if there was 4800+ nurses in one place at the same time, but that there were 4800+ OR nurses in one place at the same time seemed more than amazing to me.
The sessions were very informative, but with more than one program presented at the same time, there were some I would have liked to be repeated so I could attend both. The House of Delegates and forum sessions were great. There couldn’t have been a better way to understand what was going on in my profession. I realize now how important it is to participate in the decision-making process. The issues decided at Congress have an impact on OR nurses all over the country.
One of the best things about my week at congress was meeting nurses like me who share a love of surgical nursing; is not just a career, but is WHO WE BECOME. It’s as much a part of who I am as the air I breathe, honestly. I want to thank all the nurses that I came in contact with for being so gracious. I shared experiences, asked questions, laughed, loved, and made new friends. I am thankful that I was able to be a part of an activity that frames our profession, impacts the lives of our patients, and defines the Operating Room Nurse.
AORN has become more real to me now because of the personal experience I have shared this past week. As a nurse, I don’t think I will ever be the same again. It has revived me and made me realize that I need to work harder to advance in my profession. I was impressed with the level of expertise I encountered, and it has made me want to do more as a nurse for myself, for my patients, and for my profession. If you haven’t made it to Congress or haven’t ever served as a delegate, please do yourself a favor and be in Philadelphia March 19th, 2011 for the 58th AORN Congress. See you there!!
