Katherine Halverson-Carpenter - 2010 Delegate Report

Katherine Halverson-Carpenter
I appreciate being sent as a delegate from e-chapter. It was an honor and privilege to serve you. This was an exciting Congress being in Denver for the first time since 1962! As a member of the Denver Chapter also, it was exciting to see participation from chapter membership and two volunteer members had also attended Congress in 1962! It was a pleasure to have the conference in Denver, which provided an opportunity for many of the OR nursing staff, perioperative leadership, and perianesthesia managers where I work to attend, the majority for the first time. I am always rejuvenated by new staff attending Congress or presenting their evidence based practice projects at the poster session. The knowledge and critical thinking displayed in the posters, assures me that perioperative nursing has a great future!

The AORN membership should give themselves a “pat on the back” by taking up several tough issues at this year’s house of delegates—the by law changes. Ellen Murphy’s by law task force did an excellent job in tackling a sensitive topic with the proposed by law changes. The webinar was excellent if you had an opportunity to participate. Expanding member participation in the election of officers of an AORN has long been discussed and debated. It was a “historic” moment for AORN and I am very proud of the House of Delegates!

The Congress key note speakers were excellent and very timely, especially the experts on health policy. No matter your opinion of health policy, new information and perspectives were provided. Dr Atul Guwande’s session on patient safety was the highlight for me. He has a gift for putting a “face” to patient safety and reinforcing why I went into nursing! Thank you again for allowing me to serve as your delegate!
