2009 - Gail Van Vleck - Delegate Report

Gail Van Vleck, RN,BSN,CNOR

This was a great year!  Congress was fantastic, as usual, and Chicago was unbelievable.  Like Congress, the weather was perfect!  I love Congress not only for its educational value, but for the networking, and inspirational value it provides.

The opening session and general sessions are inspirational.  I always return home with a renewed spirit and deep inspiration for the profession I love.  Attending Congress is a wonderful avenue where I can connect with other professional colleagues from around the world and discuss, validate, and exchange new ideas.  I work in a small hospital with a small budget.   Congress is the one place I can go to see, feel, and hear about new technology and professional practice.  At Congress, everyone is so excited about what they have to offer to the industry, and they are eager to share and hear suggestions about their products or professional practice.

I have attended Congress every two years for the past seventeen years. This year was exceptionally special because I went as a delegate.  I live in a rural area, far from any local chapter.  I have always had a desire to get involved in a greater way.  A friend and colleague shared the eChapter site with me.  The site has been a real blessing.  I joined eChapter and decided to apply as a first time delegate.  To my surprise, I was accepted.

At Congress I was able to readily put names to faces, and was received with open arms by other eChapter members.  Prior to congress eChapter provided informational opportunities on candidates, bylaws, and standards, which I found really helpful.  I enjoyed attending the delegate forums, meeting and voting on candidates and important bylaws and standards affecting professional practice. It made me feel honored and valued as a professional. I was additionally inspired by professionals, who spoke passionately about laws in their state affecting their practice. I look forward to the next Congress where I can make new friends, renew old friendships, and bring inspiration back to those colleagues I work with.
