2009 - Joanne Niwa - Delegate Report

Joanne M Niwa, BSN, CNOR, CRNFA, ONC

Attending Congress as a delegate was truly an honor and an educational experience. I am grateful to the eChapter for the opportunity. On the first day I had the opportunity to meet fellow eChapter delegates. I was finally able to “put a face on the name” of other members who, like me, reached out to the internet in order to participate in our national professional organization when local chapter meetings did not exist.

I did not realize how large the eChapter had become until the First House of Delegates when it was announced how many eChapter delegates were present. The power & voice of our chapter has yet to be fully realized.

Electronic voting was new to me. I am still skeptical of its accuracy as my voting device often displayed red instead of green.

The discussion of proposed changes to the Nominating Committee was one example of the power of the individuals who care enough to become delegates. Delegates in the audience were given opportunities to speak. Even though the main motion failed when the final vote was taken, I applauded the process.

The economy has taken a toll on AORN as well our nation. Even with rising membership, the assets of the organization have taken a major hit. Unpopular ideas such as raising memberships fees as well as reducing benefits to members were discussed. Volunteering time at the eChapter booth was another way to meet and greet fellow eChapter members as well as giving information to others interested in joining the chapter. Discussions were lively and fun.

Finally, voting for AORN’s future leaders was the ultimate delegate responsibility. Information re: the candidates’ qualifications, position statements, and interviews were readily accessible to all members via the internet, Congress Resource Book, and videos at the convention center.

Thank you, eChapter, for the opportunity to represent the chapter at Congress.
