2009 - Karen LeDuc - Delegate Report

Karen LeDuc

I wish to thank eChapter for giving me the opportunity to participate in a different role at Congress.  This was my first time as a delegate and I truly appreciated the opportunity.

I would have liked to attend the luncheon and closing dinner.  I missed the luncheon because I was enrolled in an all-day pre-Congress seminar, and the dinner because I had to make my plane back to Connecticut. Those would have been great opportunities, but I enjoyed meeting so many of you during the forums, houses of delegates and at the very popular eChapter booth.

Here are the most positive things I took away from the experience:

  1. Meeting fellow members of eChapter and being amazed at who belongs and the expertise they bring to the organization, and how friendly everyone was.
  2. The camaraderie of all the delegates during the roll call.
  3. Experiencing the parliamentary aspect of the proceedings and learning more about Robert's Rules of Order.
  4. Learning how to change the bylaws while weighing a wide range of opinions.
  5. Obtaining new information presented at the forums, even though discussion was limited.
  6. Darren getting elected to the Board of Directors.
Here are some things that could have gone better for me:
  1. Having to miss the first time delegate orientation on Saturday.  I felt a little lost and this might have helped.  Unfortunately, it was offered at the same time as my pre-Congress seminar.
  2. Misinterpreting the bylaws change about the nominating committee. My interpretation had been that the nominating committee would bring people in to mentor them to be involved in the AORN leadership, not that former leadership people would be involved in influencing the decisions of the nominating committee.  I was glad that this portion did not pass but I was disappointed that some of the other parts did.  I appreciated those members of the delegation who took time to explain the background regarding this change and what it actually meant.
  3. Difficulty using the voting device.  Some of my votes were not recorded and I am not sure why.
  4. Judi Goldberg not getting elected to the Board of Directors.  She would have been a good choice.
