Congress as ever was inspirational this year and the honor of being an eChapter delegate was enlightening. I enjoyed participating in decision-making within AORN, like the debate around the role of the nominating committee: should it change to be more one of growing new leaders, or remain focused on forming the ballot for the organizational leadership. The finance report demonstrated the affect of the economy and the need to consider raising dues. We have not seen a rise in dues for some years, so this could be seen as justifiable although, it was made clear that this was a consideration only and other cost improvement means were being considered.
The eChapter annual meeting was awesome, meeting the people whom we see only at Congress from one year to the next, and to meet people who previously have only been names in our inboxes or voices on conference calls.
Due to the structure of congress and delegate responsibilities, without paying for the additional sessions on Saturday, it was difficult to attend as many of the educational sessions as I would have liked. However, that said, there was still opportunity for education throughout the exhibit hall and through networking.
Which, in conclusion, brings me to comment on one of the greatest benefits: that is networking and socialization; I gain so much from sharing with perioperative colleagues. In addition, this was my first congress since I left the UK and have been working in the USA. This year I have more insight into the issues facing perioperative staff here. Also, it was the first opportunity to attend with my husband, Lee, which was great. I think he said enough on that so no more.
I hope to see as many of you as possible next year, meet new faces and continue to keep in touch throughout the coming year as we address the business of eChapter. By next year I will have passed by US Nursing Boards and will be attending AORN congress as an RN!
