Legislative Committee

Legislative Committee
AORN’s Government Affairs Department mission is to identify, monitor, and respond to public policy issues that affect perioperative nursing and AORN members and to empower perioperative registered nurses to engage in effective efforts to shape legislative and health policy issues. Since AORN’s Government Affairs Department mission is very good; we should align our goals and objectives with them rather than reinvent the wheel.

eCHAPTER LEGISLATIVE GOALS/OBJECTIVES
  • Become a member of AORN’s Legislative Grassroots Network
  • Make contact with your AORN National Legislative Committee state coordinator
  • Write a letter of introduction to your state and federal congressmen
  • Pursue legislation in your state requiring an RN Circulator for every patient
(Coordinate it with AORN’s state coordinator)
  • Become a member of your state’s nurses association – they are very active and
  • knowledgeable in health care policy and legislation
In order for the eChapter members to become more familiar with the legislative process it would be helpful if our eChapter website could have a link to AORN’s Government Affairs Quick Link. Until we can develop something like that or if it is not practical, we should encourage any member interested in becoming politically active to go to www.aorn.org and click on Policy and then on the Government Affairs section and pull up the Quick Link.
Some of the Links that I found helpful are:
  • How Can I Get Involved
  • Grassroots Network
  • National Legislative Committee state coordinator
  • Legislative state calendar
  • Legislative material to utilize when writing or meeting with your congressman (RN as Circulator) (also on eChapter’s website http://www.echapter.org/leg.rncirc.html)
